What is the difference between a novella and a novel? How do you know which one your book is when you’re writing it?
Novellas are shorter and typically between 17,500 and 40,000 words. A novel is longer and usually over 40,000 words. Nothing is written in stone, as far as word counts go. The big difference lies between the length and the complexity of the story.
You can know which your book is by focusing on the depth of the story and characters. If you’re writing a novella then it may have a simpler plot, fewer characters, and less complex themes than a novel. Novels are more exhaustive in scope and usually include subplots, large casts of characters and complex themes.
